Abstract:

Background: Accurate classification of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals is challenging given the nonlinear and nonstationary nature of the data as well as subject-dependent variations. Graph signal processing (GSP) has shown promising results in the analysis of brain imaging data. Methods: In this article, a GSP-based approach is presented that exploits instantaneous amplitude and phase coupling between EEG time series to decode motor imagery (MI) tasks. A graph spectral representation of the Hilbert-transformed EEG signals is obtained, in which simultaneous diagonalization of covariance matrices provides the basis of a subspace that differentiates two classes of right hand and right foot MI tasks. To determine the most discriminative subspace, an exploratory analysis was conducted in the spectral domain of the graphs by ranking the graph frequency components using a feature selection method. The selected features are fed into a binary support vector machine that predicts the label of the test trials. Results: The performance of the proposed approach was evaluated on brain–computer interface competition III (IVa) dataset. Conclusions: Experimental results reflect that brain functional connectivity graphs derived using the instantaneous amplitude and phase of the EEG signals show comparable performance with the best results reported on these data in the literature, indicating the efficiency of the proposed method compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:

Soil erosion and sediment yield from watershed are among key limitations to achieve sustainable land use and to maintain the water quality. Development of the sediment graph (SG) is essentially required for accurate estimation of sediment yield from the watershed. However, development of SGs for watersheds is a tedious and time consuming task. Development of the sediment graph models based on easily accessible physical characteristics of a watershed and precipitation data is therefore a viable and convenient tool for designing the efficient soil and water conservation measures. In this regard, driving synthetic SGs using instantaneous unit sediment graph (IUSG) is an applied approach in watersheds where detailed discharge and sediment data are not available. However, the performance of this approach in watershed scale with different governing conditions has rarely been evaluated. The present study formulated IUSG for Kojour watershed comprising an area of some 500 Km2. The Watershed located at east of Nowshahr City in Mazandaran Province, northern Iran. The suspended sediment samples were taken from Kojour River during eight storm events in 2008 and corresponding SGs were then developed. The results showed that the IUSG model is unable to predict observed SGs components of peak, time to peak, total sediment yield, and the base time having respective estimation errors of 764, 111,750 and 101%.

Abstract:

A control algorithm based on the instantaneous optimal control method is presented for on-line control of structures subjected to earthquake excitations. This algorithm employs the digital state-space equation to discretize the continuous dynamical equation of motion, and named discrete instantaneous optimal control method. Based on the Lyapunov stability method, a procedure to obtain a discrete stable weighting matrix is developed. To demonstrate the precision and the efficiency of the proposed control algorithm an 8-story shear-type building frame equipped with one active mass damper/driver (AMD) mechanism is used. Behavior of different weighting matrices is also examined.

Abstract:

In this study based on the geology of targeted horizons, some horizon attributes like dip and azimuth were generated and evaluated. These attributes were used to detect faults and fractures over the 3D survey area. A complex trace analysis was also conducted on Inline 621, which passes through well No.6. Several instantaneous attributes were generated in an attempt to relate to reservoir or hydrocarbon characteristics and also to aid in time horizon correlations in poor data areas. Based on achieved results on dip, amplitude, width attributes 3 major fault were recognized. In deeper parts like Sarvak and Fahliyan, these attributes are indicating some stratigraphic features.

Abstract:

Background: S1 radiculopathy is a high prevalence illness and its early diagnosis is of crucial importance. Several reports have revealed the efficacy of magnetic stimulation in diagnosis of this condition. We conducted this study to compare MMEP latency and MMEP amplitude in patients with S1 radiculopathy and healthy controls in Shohadaye Tajreash Hospital in 2007.Materials and Methods: This historical cohort study investigated 31 patients with S1 radiculopathy (according to clinical history and physical examination) and 33 healthy controls. H-reflex, MMEP latency and MMEP amplitude were evaluated in both groups. Patients and controls were not informed about the type of study and performers were unaware of the participants condition. Results were analyzed using statistical tests. Results: There was not significant difference between cases and controls regarding age and sex. Mean MMEP latency was 15.23±2.47ms and 13.42±1.6ms in patients and controls, respectively (P<0.05) and mean MMEP amplitude was 0.55±0.53µv and 1.29±1.22µv in patients and controls, respectively (P<0.06). We found abnormal MMEP latency in 12.2% of controls and 48.4% of patients (P<0.005) and abnormal MMEP amplitude in 87.9% of controls and 100% of patients (P<0.06).Conclusion: MMEP latency seems to be efficient in diagnosis of S1 radiculopathy. A study with a precise diagnostic design is recommended.

Abstract:

The damage detection (DD) of the bridge has always been major concerns for engineers. This paper attempts to detect damage in the continuous deck bridges by providing a new method based on acceleration responses and their instantaneous amplitudes. The DD in this paper has two steps: firstly, determining the vicinity of damage in global DD. Secondly, determining the location of damage in local DD. Then by acceleration signals, the instantaneous amplitude values of healthy and damaged structural responses extracted via HHT. Further, for accurate evaluation of the proposed method, damage locations are determined by the cross-correlation damage index (DICC). To assess the feasibility and reliability of proposed methods, several analytical models of concrete bridges of one to three-spans, as well as experimental model a simply supported steel beam, have been used. In order to consider noise pollution during data acquisition, a certain amount of noise is added to the response. The results in the analytical and experimental models showed that the proposed methods can determine the damage locations with appropriate accuracy for different damage scenarios and it could provide more exact results with a rapid estimation.

Abstract:

SPECTRAL DECOMPOSITION IS AN IMPORTANT SIGNAL ANALYSIS TOOL FOR SEISMIC DATA. TRADITIONALLY, 2D REPRESENTATION IN TIME AND FREQUENCY SPACE FOR A 1D SIGNAL IS ACHIEVED BY TAKING THE FOURIER TRANSFORM OVER A SHORT-TIME WINDOW. THE WINDOWING PROBLEM IN TIME-FREQUENCY ANALYSIS IS ABSENT IN CONTINUOUS WAVELET TRANSFORM (CWT) METHOD. TIME-FREQUENCY SPECTRA ARE OFTEN CHARACTERIZED BY AVERAGE MEASURES. THESE AVERAGE MEASURES NAMELY CENTER FREQUENCY, DOMINANT FREQUENCY AND SPECTRAL BANDWIDTH ARE COMMONLY KNOWN AS SPECTRAL ATTRIBUTES. NEWLY DEVELOPED SPECTRAL ATTRIBUTES BASED ON TIME-FREQUENCY MAP OF CONTINUOUS WAVELET TRANSFORM ARE DEVELOPED IN THIS WORK.

Abstract:

In this paper, the classical economic production quantity (EPQ) model is developed for non-instantaneous deteriorating items by considering a relationship between the holding cost and the ordering cycle length. Two models are developed. First, the proposed model is considered when backorders are not permitted and this condition is waived for the second case. The cost functions associated with these models are proved to be convex and an algorithm is designed to find the optimum solutions of the proposed model. Results show that the relationship between holding cost and ordering cycle length has a significant impact on the optimal lot size and total cost in the EPQ model. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the utility of the models.

Abstract:

In this paper, a new digital filter in the category of parallel implemented Wavelet Transform Decomposition (WTD) is proposed for on-line applications. The presented method allows a faster filtering process, even if one considers calculation with every newly drawn sample, and the successive procedure of signal processing in basic Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is omitted. The most important feature of this filter is its reduced order form. Although it gives an approximated filter, its output has a good agreement with full order form and deliberately offers less delay and calculation burden to give the outputs.
